Amazon, Google, Microsoft to join White House meeting on quantum tech

By Nikita Chaurasia

Google LLC, Amazon.com Inc, and Microsoft Corp are set to join a conference on quantum technologies held by the Biden administration at the White House as the U.S. government works to ward off hacking threats and secure the flourishing quantum tech industry.

The White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is arranging the event to discuss important applications of quantum computing, which is anticipated to operate millions of times faster as compared to most advanced supercomputers today.

Honeywell International Inc, Boeing Co, Intel Corp, International Business Machines Corp, and Northrop Grumman Corp are also likely to attend the conference.

OSTP assistant director for quantum information science, Charlie Tahan, mentioned that there is a lot of enthusiasm regarding quantum sensors and quantum computers, and there is some hype related to that. He further expressed that they want to get down to the applications that a future quantum computer can operate to greatly serve society.

The technology, based on fundamental principles of physics, is still in its budding stage but has become a preferred and favorite option for investors that are looking to revolutionize finance, healthcare, weather forecasting, artificial intelligence, and other areas.

President Joe Biden's administration is focused mainly on the implications of quantum technology on national security, which potentially has the ability to easily decipher encryption standards that are in use today.

It is to be noted that China, which is a major rival of Washington, has also taken significant efforts to develop the technology.

Tahan stated that the Biden administration is also eyeing to encourage more students to enter the field and to augment cybersecurity around private research and development to curb snooping.

Congress has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars into the industry, specifically for quantum research laboratories, and bills presently under consideration could add billions more.

The White House meeting is also likely to include organizations like ColdQuanta, Quantum Economic Development-Consortium, IonQ, D-Wave, QC Ware, Vector Atomic, Rigetti Computing, and Zapata.
