Clubhouse partners with TED Talks, brings exclusive chats to platform

By Akshay Kedari

Social media application Clubhouse has reportedly joined hands with New York-based online media company TED Conferences LLC to bring exclusive chats to the audio platform. The first room named ‘Thank Your Ass Off’ will start airing weekly on the Clubhouse application, every Monday at 11AM ET from 12th July 2021, with additional rooms launching soon.

The deal will enable TED Conferences to sell ads or brand partnerships without being liable to pay a commission to Clubhouse. However, it is still unclear whether these talks will be available as on-demand recordings or podcasts.

For the record, TED Conferences’ podcast vertical is expanding rapidly and reported 1.65 million episode downloads per day in February, during its Audio Collective launch. If sources are to be believed, the American media organization will be able to enhance audience interaction and host regular Q&A sessions with speakers soon.

Notably, invitation only social media application Clubhouse is also working on Backchannel, its own private messaging feature which will allow users to chat via texts instead of audio. This move comes at a time when Spotify and Facebook announced the launch of their own copycat services, in order to compete with the growing popularity of Clubhouse.

Moreover, the company accidentally leaked Backchannel to select users last month, cited sources with relevant information.

In related news, social media giant Facebook announced Live Audio Rooms and podcasts for selective users and public figures in the United States. Meanwhile, Swedish audio streaming services provider Spotify recently rolled out Greenroom, a social audio application that enables users to host and participate in live discussions through virtual rooms.
