Ericsson-Telstra tie-up to aid OEMs in IoT connected device management

Beginning 30th March 2019, Telstra’s enterprise customers will be liable to access, track, and manage their IoT devices and other networked assets.

Renowned Australia-based service provider Telstra has announced a partnership with Ericsson in a bid to deliver IoT connectivity to OEMs and other global enterprises. If reports are to be believed, the partnership aims to combines Ericsson’s connectivity services with Telstra’s cellular IoT capabilities and thereby enable OEMs and enterprises in the deployment, scaling, and overall management of IoT connected devices & applications.

As per an official press release by Ericsson, the said declaration comes on the heels of the successful deployment of the NB-IoT extended range back in September 2018, by both the companies. Reliable sources claim that the deployment helped upsurge Telstra’s NB-IoT coverage to over 3.5 million square kilometers, enabling data connections up to 100 km – a surprising 60 kms more than the regular 3GPP standard limits.

Beginning 30th March 2019, Telstra’s enterprise customers will be liable to access, track, and manage their IoT devices and other networked assets, at a local, national or worldwide level, through the access provided to the Australian service provider’s cellular IoT capabilities. The access reportedly, is inclusive of Telstra’s CAT-M1 technology and its extensive Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT).

Emilio Romeo, Head, Ericsson Australia & New Zealand, has been quoted to state that through this partnership, enterprises will now be able to integrate their business processes with Telstra and Ericsson’s managed connectivity services and thereby create highly reliable IoT solutions that would drive digital transformation across industries in Australia and numerous other geographies.

Speaking on the partnership, Hakan Eriksson, CTO & Technology Executive, Telstra, claimed that amidst a backdrop of the IoT industry expansion, this collaboration with Ericsson will offer Telstra’s customers a much more convenient way to manage IoT connected devices and applications. Aided by Telstra’s combination of CAT-M1 and NB-IoT technologies, numerous enterprises across the globe, spanning a range of industries, will be able to gain access to international IoT connectivity solutions, Eriksson affirmed.

For the record, Telstra, Ericsson, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia have also declared plans for a 5G edge computing technology trial across the financial services sector.
