Facebook is experimenting with Instagram to take TikTok head-on

Facebook’s Instagram director recently announced that social networks are preparing to start displaying full-screen recommended videos in their feeds.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, mentioned that they are also testing ways to accept videos more broadly – immersive, full screen, entertaining, mobile-first video, and in the next couple of months, they will experiment with several other things in this space.

Mosseri specifically stated that Instagram is planning to display full-screen videos in user feeds. This will include videos recommended to users, inclusive of videos for accounts that users don’t follow. Users will notice the experiments with these changes in the ensuing months.

Mosseri further mentioned that Instagram is no longer just a photo-sharing app or a square photo-sharing app.

This indicates a remarkable change in Instagram, which has primarily been an app that enabled users to see images mainly from friends and accounts they follow. The transformation in the presentation of content will make Instagram a more direct competitor to China-owned TikTok.

Mosseri particularly emphasized TikTok and Google-owned YouTube as major competitors along with many other startups as the reasons for the experimental changes.

He further expressed that people explore Instagram for entertainment, and there is tough competition in this domain and still a long way to go. This needs to be accepted, and that implies change.

Instagram is presently focusing on its competition with TikTok as confirmed by the launch of Reels in August 2020. For the uninitiated, Reels is an Instagram feature for users to create 15-second video clips using overlay audio and augmented reality effects, similar to TikTok.
