Nokia Collaborates with Tampere University to Develop 5G Chipsets

By Nikita Chaurasia

Nokia announced that it has collaborated with Tampere University to find a ‘Center of Excellence’ to improve the expansion of System-on-Chip (SoC) custom processors for the ReefShark chipset collection.

The collaboration will be built on the University facility and focus on accelerating the establishment of the technology in the ReefShark chipset portfolio of Nokia. It will also improve the development of proprietary SoCs and the silicon capabilities of Nokia. The Center of Excellence is anticipated to commence from November this year.

The joint venture aims to stimulate the development of proprietary SoC chipsets with their design and manufacture, boost the time-to-market, and build a foundation for technology leadership and a long-term SoC development capability. Additionally, the partnership will target a yearly chip cadence with ecosystem partners and see Nokia bestow to physical implementation and module.

Nokia will also discover areas like machine learning, security hardware development, and artificial intelligence along with open-source hardware-based SoCs. Nokia’s worldwide reach will help Tampere University with future research projects and guide them in their method of educating the engineers of the future.

Business Finland is supporting the project via Nokia’s Veturi initiative that fosters the development of industrial 5G and ecosystem with leading universities and industry partners. Nokia has upheld a close collaboration with Tampere University ever since the ‘Nokia Innovation Center’ was sharing a location with the University in the 2000s.

Tampere University’s Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Jyrki Vuorinen, expressed his excitement about teaming with Nokia to create custom silicon System-on-Chip solutions for 5G infrastructure. This is a thrilling joint project that stimulates silicon innovation and finally allows operators to realize the benefits of 5G. He confirmed that they have employed a professor of practice and began the recruitment process of two international professorships.

Nokia’s head of Product Management, Ari Kynaslahti, stated that this partnership highlights their continued dedication to developing their ReefShark chipset portfolio and make sure that 5G solutions of Nokia provide an excellent performance to their customers.
