Tata Motors to launch a mini electric SUV before India’s festive season

By Akshay Kedari

Tata Motors Limited is reportedly all set to launch the Hornbill SUV in India by 2021. The mini SUV will be a size lower than the already popular compact SUV, the Tata Nexon.

With the new launch, Tata intends to expand its sales network while maintaining its newly acquired 10.3% market share in the passenger vehicle market. The company also aims to add over 250 sales outlets across India by the end of the financial year 2021 to grab new customers as well as bolster its sales capacity.

Confirming the news, the President of Passenger Vehicles Business at Tata Motors Shailesh Chandra, stated that the move reflects on the company’s strategy to increase the total number of outlets from 750-800 to 920-950 by the year-end. He has also hinted at another big launch lined up, following the all-electric Hornbill SUV.

Tata Motors claims to have produced around 11,000 units each month until last year. On the other hand, the company has been producing 30,000 units this year, focusing on increasing its production, planning, and marketing capabilities.

Chandra added that the company has been able to cater to the demand of the consumers which they have generated through strategic initiatives. The ensuing festive season will be “quite productive” for the entire market, he added.

After the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of passenger vehicles has witnessed a surge in India. Tata Motors Limited managed to grab this opportunity, which has allowed it to build a comfortable inventory catering to the upcoming festive season.

However, with the probability of the third wave looming around, the Indian automotive giant is anxious about the dearth of semiconductor chips all over the world that could disrupt the progress.

Rumors have it that Tata Motors Limited is expected to unveil the electric-variant of the Tata Tigor on August 17th this year.
